Fit & comfort
Loose or uncomfortable dentures: when to get help
When dentures start moving during a meal or no longer feel comfortable, it can be difficult to know what to ask for. A fit assessment is a useful starting point. You can describe the problem without deciding in advance whether you need a repair, reline, or replacement.
At a glance
A change in fit deserves an assessment. Extra adhesive is not a substitute for checking why a denture has become loose.
Changes worth discussing
The American Dental Association identifies ongoing irritation, poor stability, cracks, missing denture teeth, and increasing dependence on adhesive as reasons for a professional evaluation. These signs do not establish which treatment you need; they help explain why an examination matters. See the ADA’s denture evaluation guidance.
Before calling, note what you have noticed:
- Does the denture move when you eat, speak, or both?
- Did the change happen suddenly or develop gradually?
- Is one area sore, or does the whole appliance feel different?
- Is there visible damage, and when did you first notice it?
These details give the clinic a clearer picture than simply saying the denture “does not feel right.”
Ask about fit, condition, and next steps
The assessment can address two separate questions: how the appliance fits your mouth, and what condition the appliance is in. A loose denture may need relining or replacement; an examination helps determine which is appropriate. Mayo Clinic explains why loose dentures should be checked.
You can read about the clinic’s reline service, denture repairs, and complete dentures before your visit. Ask the clinician to explain the options, the expected appointments, and what is included in the estimate. The right next step depends on the assessment, rather than the name of the service you first searched for.
Do not rely on more adhesive to solve poor fit
Adhesive can help some well-fitting dentures, but the ADA advises that it is not a remedy for poor fit. Follow the product directions and discuss a change in how much you need with your dental professional. Read the ADA’s advice on denture adhesive.
If you use an adhesive, note its name and how often you apply it. That is useful information to bring to the appointment alongside your cleaning routine.
Arrange an assessment in Edmonton
New dentures can take time to get used to, but persistent irritation or soreness should be checked. The ADA describes adjustment and follow-up care. When booking, tell the clinic if the denture is broken, if you cannot wear it comfortably, or if the problem is affecting meals.
